Amoebas low risk: study, NATION

A CHIANG MAI biologist yesterday confirmed that the amoebas found in
Chiang Mai were not fatal but could cause dysentery, at worst.
After taking samples from eight ditches in various points in Chiang
Mai province, the only type of amoebas found were of the striata strain.
The two types that caused the recent deaths were the Naegleria fowleri
and the Acanthamoebia keratitis.
Nevertheless, Chamaporn Niwasabut, a biology professor at Chiang Mai
University, warned that playing in muddy water or damp dirt could be risky
because amoebas usually reside in such ...
