Poland's ex-communist leader dead
WARSAW, Poland, Jul 30, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Edward Gierek, Poland former communist leader through the 1970s, is dead. He was 88.
Gierek died Sunday in Cieszyn, in southern Poland, his son Adam Gierek told the PAP news agency Monday.
Gierek was the first secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party between 1970 and 1980.
The former communist leader suffered from black lung, or pneumoconiosis, which he picked up while working in coal mines in France and Belgium from 1923-48. He joined politics ...
