UNHCR Takes Measures to Protect Refugees in Zambia, XINHUA

LUSAKA, August 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) will issue identification cards to refugees in Zambia
in the next few weeks to protect them from harassment by local law enforcement
officers.

UNHCR Southern African Regional Director Illunga Ngandu, who has been
in the country since last Saturday, announced the plan at a press briefing
at the UNHCR office here on Friday.

UNHCR will also put in place a stringent screening mechanism with a
view of identifying and isolating combatants from civilian refugees in
