Wednesday, July 11, 2001 -- Most of us know a palm, a fern or a conifer when we see one. Palms have tall tree-like trunks topped with large fan or palm leaves. A conifer's hallmark is that it usually bears cones. Ferns do not flower, and have spores rather than seeds under their leaves.

The cycad resembles a palm, a conifer and sometimes a fern, but is none of these. This is where things get complicated.
