Seasoned diplomat Kocheril Narayanan has reached the pinnacle of Indian
politics but life is still grim for those of society's lower castes, writes
Rahul Bedi.

Kocheril Raman Narayanan, an ''untouchable" Hindu from the lowest Harijan
caste has been sworn in as India's tenth president, succeeding a high caste
Brahmin to the country's highest job for a five-year term.

Narayanan's election is widely viewed as a victory of India's majority
low caste population still discriminated against by high caste Hindus.
