In the 1970s, Asian American community organizers and student activists discovered they shared something besides radical politics; some were musicians, they played jazz in their off hours, and they began to play together. They developed a style now known as Asian American jazz. Reese Erlich reports from San Francisco that many of those musicians went on to become professionals, though they haven't given up on the politics.
