YESTERDAY, Indonesians celebrated the centennial of Sukarno, their
first president.
Born on June 6 1901, Sukarno died in disgrace on June 21 1970 while
under house arrest.
Not many understood him while he was alive and even more could not
figure him out after his death.
As such, it is understandable that the reverence accorded to him
equals the disdain.
Beneath this enigma, there is much about Sukarno that overwhelms not
only Indonesians but many from what was then Malaya.
