PARIS, May 2 (IPS) -- Berber human rights and democracy
activists have accused the Algerian authorities of provoking
violence in the eastern region of Kabylia as an excuse to step up
the military's presence in the area.
Between 60 and 80 people have been killed and some 600 wounded
in the region in the last 11 days.
The area is populated by Berbers, a non-Arab population
historically resistant to the one-party rule that has
characterized the country since its independence from France in
