Fed: Fed govt signals ban on chrysolite asbestos

CANBERRA, April 11 AAP - The federal government said today it would seek government
and industry support to ban the use and importation of chrysotile (white) asbestos by
the end of 2003.

The mineral is largely used in the manufacture of vehicles, particularly brake linings,
and has been the subject of long campaigning by unions involved in that industry.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) welcomed the move as a victory for
