PARIS, Apr. 5 (IPS) -- French Communists like to joke that if
their former leaders, Maurice Thorez and Georges Marchais, could
see the party now, they would barely recognize it.
The French Communist Party (PCF) under the late Thorez and
Marchais was a rigidly centralized organization, always loyal to
the Soviet Union and intolerant of dissident.
Today, the PCF is an open organization which accepts that new
members should not necessarily be Marxists. It has abolished the
hammer amd sickle from the party's emblem.
