In the aftermath of World War II, countries in Southeast Asia became more nationalistic as they rejected continued colonial rule for independence. Many adopted indigenous languages as their national languages and the medium of instruction in schools. Malaysia made Malay its national language and Indonesia did the same. But Singapore a small multiethnic island-nation sandwiched between these two much larger countries took a different tack after it gained self-government from Britain in 1959 and sovereignty in 1965.
