Maestro Meets Jazz Master Ornette Coleman

Like generals plotting a coming battle, the jazzman and the maestro sat at a table, a music score spread out before them, others huddled around.

"My trombone can kill your clarinet here," Kurt Masur, music director of the New York Philharmonic, says to alto sax player Ornette Coleman, leader of the Prime Time octet.

"But the clarinet has a mike," points out Joel Sachs, director of the Juilliard School's annual 20th-century music festival. "You've got more players, but Ornette's people have got mikes."
