Former Gurkha soldiers face an uncertain future

Gurkha soldiers who retired from the British Army in Hong Kong face an uncertain future following the July 1 handover of the colony to China.

Britain had, in 1991, announced that it would reduce its armed forces by a third by the mid-1990s.

Consequently, the number of Gurkha soldiers serving in the army dwindled to 2,500 in two infantry and support battalions. All but about 100 of them were granted British citizenship in 1996.

Those who got British passports are now in the United Kingdom. The 100-odd Gurkha soldiers ...
