Impact of Iran's President-Elect Mohammad Khatami Remains to be Seen

According to Iranian law, Hashemi Rafsanjani was unable to run for President a third time. The law was followed and 22,726,364 voters went to the polls and elected a new president. More than two-thirds of the votes cast went for the mold of the outgoing Rafsanjani. The election of Khatami is said by several Iranian experts to be an upset and a protest vote by the electorate, who are supposedly looking for "new faces and new visions" to run the country.
