Some time ago I saw a spotted salamander resting on the bottom of my garden pool. I sat quietly on the rocky edge and after a very long wait, I watched it drift silently to the surface. With one scoop of my watering can I captured the swimmer and moved it to an old aquarium.
A good friend, a kindergarten teacher who had enthusiastically hatched the caterpillars I found into butterflies for her students to enjoy, took the salamander to her classroom. Samantha, the salamander, became a classroom resident and lived there for a long time. I hope she ...
