Philadelphia Orchestra names Eschenbach

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Orchestra became the first of
three major American orchestras currently seeking new conductors to announce
that it has ended its search by selecting Christoph Eschenbach, who left the
Houston Symphony after an 11-year tenure as conductor last year.

Eschenbach's appointment was disclosed at a press conference Tuesday by
Philadelphia Orchestra President Joseph H. Kluger after a lengthy search for a
successor to Wolfgang Swallisch, who will continue as conductor through the
