Breaking Away: Now more than ever, American Jews and Israelis are. strangers. What does the growing rift mean for the future?

If Israel finds peace, American Jews may lose their identity.

That's the bottom line of a new rift in the relationship between American and Israeli Jews that is in dire need of a new definition. For decades, the relationship revolved around a mutual dependency.

We American Jews needed Israel as a connection and spark to our own Jewish heritage; Israelis needed our financial and political support.
