CARIBBEAN: RASTAFARIANISM MAKES GAINS AS LEGITIMATE RELIGION

PORT OF SPAIN, May 25 (IPS) -- Moves to officially recognize
Rastafarian practices in the Caribbean have gained momentum in
places like Jamaica, where the legal affirmation of the faith is
being proposed, and in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where the
government is proposing legislation to protect the dreadlocks of
jailed Rastas.
However, some Rastafarian practices, especially the
ritualistic use of marijuana, remain major bugbears for
legislators seeking to create a less oppressive environment for
the Caribbean-based faith.
