Fed: Australia backs Irian Jaya staying with Indonesia

CANBERRA, Oct 8 AAP - Australia today urged Indonesia to adopt restraint in dealing
with Irian Jaya, saying it should have learned from East Timor that violence only bred
resentment.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Australia believed Irian Jaya, or West Papua,
should remain part of Indonesia.
