Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born in 1818, a fifth-generation American slave. His early years were spent with his grandmother, Betsey Bailey, living on a small farm. In 1824, he was taken by his grandmother to live and work at the home of his master -- Aaron Anthony. Anthony, who was rumored to be Frederick's father, was chief overseer of the Lloyd Plantation. When he was about eight, Frederick was sent to live with Hugh and Sophia Auld, the in-laws of Anthony's daughter, in the Fells ...
