Fed: Kalejs extradition moves closer

CANBERRA, Sept 29 AAP - The extradition of Konrad Kalejs from Australia moved a step
closer today with authorities in Latvia charging him with genocide over his alleged involvement
in the mass murder of Jews during World War II.

The long-awaited charges allege Mr Kalejs helped administer plans to exterminate Jewish
and other prisoners at the Salaspils concentration camp near the Latvian capital Riga.

The 86-year-old immigrant, a naturalised Australian, is now believed to be living in
a nursing home in Melbourne.
