Ath: Montalvo Olympic hopes dashed

MADRID, Aug 16 Reuters - Spain's Cuban-born long jumper Niurka Montalvo was denied
a chance to complete a world championship and Olympic double when her former country refused
an appeal to let her compete at the Sydney Games.

"Every possibility has now been exhausted," said Spanish sports minister Juan Antonio
Gomez Angulo after a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Humberto Rodriguez at Madrid's
Barajas airport.

"It just wasn't possible. The only chance now is an appeal for a magnanimous gesture,
a generous gesture."
