Margaret Atwood has delved into the Canadian past and emerged with a gem. On one level, the book is about a notorious 1843 murder case which grabbed headlines and titillated Victorian prudes. Yet, on closer inspection, it reveals layers of meaning, presenting a harsh critique of a bygone age.
