Van de Velde Returns to British Open

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) -- The image is etched in the memory of any golf fan. Jean Van de Velde, pants rolled up past his knees, stood in the frigid water fronting the 18th green at Carnoustie, a wry smile on his face that belied the spectacular collapse taking place around him.

Moments earlier, he had stood on the 18th tee with a three-shot lead and the British Open secure in his grasp. Now, he was blowing the chance of a lifetime.

His thoughts at the moment? About as deep as the water in the Barry ...
