Studying Talmud

SCOTT SIMON, HOST: In synagogues around the world today, Jews are
reading from the Talmud, that mammoth text of Jewish law for nearly
2,000 years. The Talmud has been called Judaism's encyclopedia, and
it consists of a synopsis of Jewish law known as the Mishna (ph),
and treatises on law, ethics, and mysticism called the Gomorrah (ph).
A polish rabbi is credited with starting the practice of daily Talmud
study in 1923. That practice has not only endured, it continues to
grow in popularity in many places.
From New York City, John Kalish reports.
