At twilight, 16 C-47 transport planes, known as "Dakotas," crossed into the Sinai Desert and headed deep into Egyptian territory. Flying low, at about 500 feet, the lead pilot set the course for a major mountain pass. In the holds were 395 paratroopers from the crack 202 Parachute Brigade anxiously waiting for the green light to signal the beginning of the legendary and daring drop at Mitla Pass exactly 40 years ago this week.
