Fifty years ago, Alger Hiss was indicted for perjury. Hiss was accused
of being a Soviet agent while serving in the State Department.
His conviction became a defining moment in the Cold War and it convinced
many Americans that communist subversion was real.
Controversy has surrounded the Hiss case for decades and many questions
remain unanswered. Recent revelations from Soviet intelligence archives
have convinced some scholars that Hiss was guilty. But much of the
