The 1916 battle of Verdun claimed over half a million French and German
soldiers. Noah Adams reads an excerpt of Carl Sandberg's poem, ``Grass'
' which was written after Sandberg visited the battlefield.
NOAH ADAMS, Host: In France, the anniversary of the battle of Verdun
was observed today. It was the 21st of February in 1916 when the
fighting started at Verdun. It continued thorugh that summer 80 years
ago. It was a battle of the Great War, which had its beginnings in
a conflict over Serbia. The United States entered the war the following
year.
