Saint Petersburg Gets Facelift for 1994 Goodwill Games

BOB EDWARDS, Host: This is Morning Edition; I'm Bob Edwards. The third Goodwill Games get underway tomorrow in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The international sporting event was founded in 1986 by Ted Turner as a kind of consolation prize for U.S. and Soviet Olympic athletes who were not able to compete because of boycotts against the Olympics in 1980 and '84. In the past, worldwide interest in the Goodwill Games has been limited, certainly in comparison to the excitement over the World Cup tournament.
