JACKI LYDEN, Host: [over music by Hovhaness] When composer Alan Hovhaness
was in his late teens, he questioned the state of classical music,
and he decided to write another kind of music.
ALAN HOVHANESS, Composer: I believe very much in melody, but melody,
as far as the usual Western scales, is, I thought, was an atrocity.
All good melodies have been written by Schubert and Mozart and the
old composers, so I thought I'll try using different scales.
