JOHN BURNETT, Host: This is NPR's Weekend Edition. I'm John Burnett. Texans like their politicians highly spiced. Governor W. Lee `Pappy' O'Daniel [sp?] used to broadcast with his band, The Hillbilly Boys from the governor's mansions on Sundays in 1939.

BURNETT: Everyone remembers when Lyndon Johnson showed off a scar on the White House lawn, and Clayton Williams [sp?], the GOP candidate for governor in 1990, rode a horse up the steps of the state capitol. Governor Ann Richards continues in this grand tradition.
