Texas A&M oceanography department celebrates 50th anniversary

(The Battalion) (U-WIRE) COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- In 1949, Texas A&M became the first college in the United States to offer a degree in oceanography, and Friday the department celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Dr. William Bryant, head of the Department of Oceanography, said a dinner Friday and a symposium Saturday will celebrate the anniversary.

He said there will be six speakers at the dinner, including the director of the National Oceanography and Atmospheric Agency, four speakers from the industry and one from A&M.
