Chehalis basket maker redefines retirement

The Chehalis Tribe is located on the food plain of the Chehalis Ricer in western Washington on relatively flat land. Nonetheless, Chehalis elder and master weaver Hazel Pete describes her rambler as being perched on "the top of the hill." Granted, there's a dip in the road just before her driveway, but it takes nothing less than sheer optimism for Hazel to say she lives on a hilltop.
