Yorktown residents prove critics wrong 35 years later.

They proudly call their special neighborhood the "Crow Jewel" of North Philadelphia, along with other glowing compliments.

Residents and visitors often run out of adjectives describing Yorktown, a middle-class residential development that has refused to give in to traditional inner-city problems.

Many of the city's most prominent African Americans have called Yorktown home, including the late Tribune President Eustace Gay.
