TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Peter A. Franken, a pioneering laser researcher, died March 11 of liver disease. He was 70.

Franken, former director of the University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center, is considered the father of non-linear optics for having discovered that the color of a laser beam can be changed by passing it through a crystal.

His research included use of lasers for burn treatments, disposal of radioactive waste and optical methods for early detection of breast cancer.
