Ape Fossils Provide New Insight
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A baboon-sized ape that lived in East Africa about 15 million years ago may have been among the first primates to leave the treetops and live on the ground, a key step in the evolutionary path that theoretically led eventually to humans.
The fossilized partial skeleton of the animal is distinctly different from other ancient apes, prompting researcher Steve Ward and his colleagues to identify it as the only member of a new ape genus they call Equatorius.
