The last great feat of land exploration possible on the planet was the discovery of the North Pole. An African American played a role of major importance in this discovery.
Matthew Alexander Henson was born in 1867 on a farm in Maryland. He was the only Black who accompanied Commander Robert E. Peary when the explorer reached the North Pole in 1909.
