FED: Human rights off the Jiang Zemin menu

CANBERRA, Sept 8 AAP - Human rights were off the menu at a state luncheon for China's
President Jiang Zemin in federal parliament's Great Hall today.

Ten years ago last June, former prime minister Bob Hawke stood in the same room and openly
wept for the victims of Chinese oppression and the massacre in Tiananmen Square.

Today, Mr Hawke was among the lunch guests who heard Prime Minister John Howard defend
Australia's decision to keep China's human rights ...
