On the eve of the day dedicated to lovers, Oscar De La Hoya broke a heart, showed his heart and won some hearts during the WBC welterweight championship bout he fought against Ike Quartey at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya, 26, faced his toughest competition yet, defeating the naysayers and Quartey in 12 rounds. Critics said De La Hoya had been avoiding difficult fights by fighting boxers who were past their prime or who were physically smaller. Quartey, 29, is neither.
