Lorraine V. Hansberry: First African American Honored By N.Y. Drama. Critics Circle
Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on May 19, 1930. During her short life of only 35 years, she made a vivid imprint on the American theater scene. She authored "A Raisin in the Sun," that captured the New York Drama Critics Circle Awards as best play during the 1958-59 season. She was the first black author to earn such a prize. "A Raisin in the Sun," was eventually adapted into a movie and remains a classic.
