ON LANGUAGE: All in the Family

Allah ir-rahim ir-rahman, malik yom id-din, "God the Merciful and Compassionate,the King of judgment day," intoned the imam at one point during King Hussein's funeral, watched by millions of television viewers around the world. Most of them did not know Arabic. Yet even among those who didn't, some would have understood this phrase perfectly. These were the ones who knew Hebrew, into which the Arabic words translate as ha-el ha-rahum ha-rahaman, melekh yom ha-din.
