NT: Evacuees speak of burning Dili

DARWIN, Sept 6 AAP - Hundreds of evacuees airlifted from Dili by the RAAF today spoke of a
city full of burning homes, constant shooting and terrorised citizens.

In a terrifying ordeal, a United Nations convoy of evacuees was halted and then fired on by
armed militiamen as it tried to reach Dili airport.

Unhurt, they finally got through, and were among non-essential UN staff and other
foreigners airlifted to Darwin aboard three Hercules transport aircraft, which each flew two
missions.
