Sharpshooters left the island Monday claiming partial success in
eliminating the deer herd that has become a major source of Lyme disease.
The team shot 21 deer in a week, leaving 10 to 15 white-tailed deer still
roaming the island. Should the sharpshooters succeed in killing all the deer,
Monhegan will be the first area in the nation where the deer population was
intentionally exterminated.
Two deer were found dead in the woods from previous gunshot wounds. Two
