WHAT AN ending. On Monday, there seemed to be little question that
the Soviet Union's experiment in democracy was crushed. By Wednesday,
the coup led by the gang of eight ignorant thugs collapsed, suddenly and
dramatically. Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev returned to Moscow.
Boris Yeltsin, the president of the Russian Republic, emerged with new
international stature and respect.
