Pastor can't choose which parts of Bible to believe; Writer's words, thoughts lead others astray Retired pastor Tom Hutt asks who now believes that God created the universe in six days or killed the first-born children of the Egyptians in the time of Moses. I do, and so do millions of other believers. In similar fashion, I also believe that the practice of homosexuality is both forbidden by God and an abomination to him. God has clearly stated his opposition to this behavior in both the Old and New Testaments. God hates sin and expects us to listen to him. But I do understand Hutt. Like Adam and Eve, he listens to Satan when he says, "Did God really say?" Well, God does say, and we should listen to him. Even Hutt's example of the little girl and purple trees shows how messed up he really is. He would have us believe that we can make trees whatever color we want and it is so and it is proper. It is not so and it is not proper. Hutt should not only read the Scriptures, but should take special note of the terrible end that awaits him for his leading others astray. We should have no hatred for Hutt or for homosexuals. But all who believe and trust in the words that God clearly gives us will hate their sin and not try to justify it by diminishing God's words. Rolf Reineck Glendale; Hutt shouldn't spend time criticizing the church I agree with boycotting Disney's theme parks due to Disney's family-unfriendly trends. And I disagree with Tom Hutt, who claims authority as a "retired pastor." Who can blame a church family for not wanting to expose their children to unhealthy behavior likely to be seen at a public place that promotes it? In his statement that the Southern Baptists "do not manifest wisdom or compassion," I question whose wisdom Hutt subscribes to, the world's or God's. As for compassion, while not condemning those who practice homosexuality, because all have sinned and fall short of God's glory, we should not validate this behavior. Jesus taught that it was one thing to sin, but worse yet to cause others to. We can love these people without embracing their actions. Regarding Hutt's questioning of the validity of Old Testament doctrine, remember that Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it, and that God does not change. Although Christ paid the price for the sins of those who accept him, we are not to continue to sin, but should reject sin out of love, honor and respect for God. Hutt needs to spend more time seeking God's will and less time criticizing Christ's church. Bob Langenhahn Appleton; Former pastor represents a church of unbelief Tom Hutt, retired Presbyterian pastor, writes one question that is valid for sure. He asks what Southern Baptists would do if a Super Bowl is televised by ABC, a Disney affiliate. He needs to ask a Southern Baptist sports fan directly. I am neither, but I agree that Americans in general have gone sports crazy at great expense, spiritually speaking. As for his more important questions: Who now believes that God created the earth as he says he did and who can believe what he says concerning homosexuality? Let me say I do. And Hutt must know there are millions of believers of God's word. Hutt represents a ministry of unbelief. I left a Presbyterian church in my middle 30s when God opened my understanding to his glory and grace, and I became a Christian. I was even a deacon in that church of unbelief.
