FED: Aust govt welcomes new PNG prime minister

CANBERRA, July 14 AAP - Acting Prime Minister Tim Fischer today congratulated Papua New
Guinea's new Prime Minister, Sir Mekere Morauta, wishing him well in what he said would be a
challenging post.

The leader of the People's Democratic Movement was elected to succeed Bill Skate by 99
votes to five, a day after it appeared former speaker John Pundari had sewn up the leadership.

"I congratulate Sir Mekere on his election as Prime Minister of PNG," Mr Fischer told AAP.
