The Cathal DERVAN Column: RAILWAY CUP NEEDS AMERICAN LIFELINE

ON Sunday afternoon, a mere 500 or so people turned up at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny to watch 40 of the country's best hurlers in action.

Such is the current state of the Railway Cup competition in hurling, a competition that once drew capacity crowds to Ennis, Kilkenny and Croke Park.

Nowadays nobody really cares about the Railway Cup. Nobody wants to watch it, nobody wants to sponsor it and nobody really wants to play in it, if they were truthful.

Which is a shame. One of the great traditions of Irish sporting ...
