Adult literacy crisis attracts efforts of WSU adult education

Illiteracy has crept into the American culture like a thief in the night. It steals a person's selfesteem, deprives them from earning an income, and keeps them on the welfare rolls.
In Michigan, approximately 500,000 people (6-8 percent adults) age 18 or older have less than a ninth grade education and 23.2 percent of Michigan adults age 25 and over, have not graduated from high school (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1990).
