As part of a push to direct traffic away from city streets, the Maine
Turnpike Authority is moving forward with plans to start building another
interchange in Portland next summer.
While designed to improve traffic flow, the project also would open up land
in Portland and Westbrook to large-scale commercial develop- ment.
Turnpike officials, working with officials in Westbrook and Portland, have
selected a site that straddles the city line, about halfway between Exit 8 and
