Sura Maharas plans new distilleries ahead of liberalisation, NATION

SURA Maharas Plc, which has held the monopoly for local whisky
distilling for more than a decade, yesterday announced plans to build four
new whisky plants.

The move is seen as a bid by the company to stay ahead of newcomers as
the industry is liberalised.

Sawat Sopa, assistant managing director, said, however, the objective
was ''to help sustain the economy in the four regions we operate in and
keep current staff employed''.

Sura Maharas merged with the Sura Thip Group about 10 years ago.
